About OARS

Olin Aquatic Robotic Systems is a 25-student project team at Olin College of Engineering in Needham, MA. We are a student-run team dedicated to developing capable water vessels. This year, we are working towards competing in the AUVSI Roboboat competition in June.

OARS was previously Olin Robotic Sailing (ORS), an Olin project team started in 2013 focusing on designing and building autonomous sailboats. As ORS, we competed in the International Robotic Sailing Regatta three times with two boats, securing first, third, and then fifth place. Our boat for the Summer 2016 competition was a 4-meter autonomous Sunfish named Enterprise. Enterprise was our first step to working on a sailboat that could autonomously traverse the Atlantic Ocean.

This year, we have broadened our focus to gain more experience building various robotic water vessels. Our vision is still to complete an autonomous trans-Atlantic sailing mission, and in previous years we have learned about building and controlling sailboats. Competing in the Roboboat Competition allows us to explore autonomy on the water and building polished software systems.

Follow our semester-long journey as we build our first ever autonomous motorboat, FourOhFour! We have an exciting time ahead as we manufacture, test, and iterate towards our newest intelligent aquatic vessel.
